Theres No I in Team!

In a feat of artistic genius i decided to find and upload a picture of the gang, many more will come shortly!

In order of appearance Luke(our main actor), George(Sound Coordinator, works bloomin hard doing so and is always good at shaping my my plans into something tangible and something we are ultimately able to work with), the mighty david bowie (but if you look slightly up you will see I Jake!!!!!! editer, scriptwriter, basically the ideas guy ), and last but not least Tom (our fine cameraman, storyboard expert and provider of fake facial hair)

Oh and I'm not sure why we are wearing fake mustaches but with most things in life it seemed like a good idea at the time

Disposable...the titles!!

Just briefly wanted to explain the titles

We used a white backdrop in order to blend it in with the film. We had tried a black background but it didn't blend in well with the rest of the shots so used a white still as our background. Black writing we felt worked best against the backdrop, and using just black and white fittied in well with our film. We added a glow to the font as this made it look mysterious. The Font was used, simply because we felt it wasn't too smart, it was inkeeping with the attitudes of our main protaganist. The use of the writing starting on the screen and then being erased we felt acted as metaphor towards the main protaganists feelings, as he too feels as though he wants to erase himself into sheer nothingness.

Our Evaluation

Friday 26 March 2010

The hills are alive with the sound of Disposable!

I (George) will be taking you thorugh the thorught process and development of our awesome soundtrack. Despite Jakes lust for Marilyn Manson (actually worried for him!) i thought to use something more edgy that would compliment the soundtrack. I Listened to Massive Attack, Smashing Pumpkins, The Strokes and Radiohead in order to get a feel of what i wanted, as i felt these were on the same wave length of what i wanted.

After grasping Garage Band, eventually, and playing around with many different sound effects for a very long time i crafted our final sound track.

I decided to layer it, as i felt that this would build tension amongst the audience. if i used the same soundtrack for the whole sepquencer it would become boring, tiresome and annoying to listen to, so this way the audience doesn't get frustrated by the soundtrack.

A base track, 'Under Servaillence' was downloaded from http://www.freeplaymusic.com/

This is the Primary sound we used, as it lasted long enough to cover the sequence and as a pre recorded track it already had variation in it. It had quite a mysterious sound to it, which reflected the mental state of the main protaganist and went well when i layered any sounds over the top.

The music for the opening titles was a mixture of an Ambient Noise Effect and a Percussion Sound. This sounded quite creepy to me and thought it set up the movie genre well. It gave the audience a feeling of what the film would be about.

I used a distorted heartbeat to highlight the unstable conditon of the main protaganist. I thought it made the film more personal as you felt like as it signified his heartbeat, you knew the character more personally and you're able to connect with him. this is used at the beginning and end with no backing as i felt it focused more on the sound, making it bolder and more memorable.

After this i layered the track with Modern Rock Bass Line and a Mono Syth track used after. i wanted variation in order to not bore the audience or annoy them with repetetiveness so these played one after the other. These were picked as they complimented the base track well and in the case of the Bass, added to the heartbeat effect.

I also added a faint howling noise over the bass, which i found had a disturbing effect to it and again signifies the mental state of the main protanganist.

We took sound off at the end of the track to emphisise the pill bottle dropping which we found peircing and embeded the scene into the audience. Clips at the end on the sequence and during the sequence with no backing sound were done to make the script clearer and to highlight specific parts we felt the audinece neede to hear in order to clarify the story or to give the audience a reaosn to carry on watching the film "This is more than just a fall from grace".

Anyway hopefully i didn't go on too much and i hope you enjoy our opening sequence

Storyboards

file://cgsstore1/cgsusers/Students/cs2009/cs09gellis2/newstoryboard4.jpg

This is our final development of our storyboards. The first frames entice the audience into the film. The shot of the alleyway shows that the chracter feels lonely and isolated. The cut to effect breaks the sense of reality and the use of suicides shows is unstable state of mind due to his emotions. The use of shading in the frames represents the mono colours of black and white, which is the effect we added to the final production. This adds to the connotations of depression as it represents the characters of emotions of being bleak and unhopeful. We took inspiration from the genre of psychological/thriller in order to express the emotions of our film. The films Requiem for a Dream and Wristcutters: A Love Story provided the intertextuality of our production. The imagery of death and suicide fitted in with the plot to our film and how it can frighten the audience as well as attract them to it and make them want to watch on.

A new design

As i will be spending many an hour on this website tonight, i thought i would do my best to make it as appealing to the eye as humanly possible while still linking to our film and so i have changed the default setting to a new colour scheme of black(nice and menacing and always in fashion), white(a great contrast to black and by far my favorite shade) and red (great annotations and fits with our genre)

Jake and all his artistic talents

I feel it is time to tell a tale...

Now in my head this seems like a amazing idea however, i suppose you will be the true judge, i am going to try and explain how i came up with our narrative by placing you in the mindset of twisted, bored individual with a love of melancholy and pointy boots.

About a week or so before our halfterm it became apparent that our original idea of a gangster mafioso Tarantino like conversation was going no were. So i sat George and Tom down and managed to convince them to allow me to come up with a new simple narrative (little to no violence was required i swear) taking inspiration from 'Wristcutters A Love Story', i wanted to create a simple but shocking introduction on the theme of suicide (cheerful i know), the scene from which i based our film around can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXt_dlmUnNE after showing tom and George this intro they became as interested in the new narrative as i was (or they just wanted to shut me up, still not completely sure on which). We sat down as a group and many arguments, sushi and Marilyn Manson videos later we came up with our introduction.

We choose our actor and only character Luke who we picked due to his(and don't tell him this) rather average appearance in which he looks like he could be an anybody, therefore making his suicidal nature even more unexpected, alongside this it makes it far easier for the audience to relate to him, rather than some strange demented wild haired, skinny, winkle-picker wielding monstrosity(you can guess which of the two i preferred, alas the others were right and so i backed down)

Luke will be walking down a dark path, cutting to the suicidal scenes taking place in his mind, going back and fourth, Luke would eventually emerge from the path swathed in light (oh yes i forgot to mention everything will be in black and white fading to white at the end) the reasoning behind this is that his violent thoughts allow him the escapism required to get through the mundane of everyday life, and what ever dark events have caused his mindset (however to find out what events you will just have to watch our finished film)

We are yet to decide on the soundtrack, i would like to use something similar to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39kuAiz6ENA# which was used as the main song for the film 'Max Payne' here is a link to the film on IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0467197/
However i beilive that George is currently working on our soundtrack using garageband, but just to be safe i will spend a few hours sifting through 'Freeplay Music' a website which provides free uncopyrighted music, heres a link to the songs i am searching through now, i am searching for a cinematic industrial metal song at the moment but with little success http://www.freeplaymusic.com/search/category_search.php?t=s&i=86.

congratulations to anyone who managed to read all of that without going off to commit your very own suicide out of boredom(however if you feel it is necessary please film it as it could be very helpful for our film)

As you can most likely guess from reading this blog it was I, the mighty Jake who wrote this.

A dark cloud lingers over my brilliance

Well im back from quite a large void of blogs and with my epic return i come with BAD news my script has gone missing after days of labour, i have managed to lose one of the most important vital of things! my laptop after being repaired has been WIPED OF ALL MEMORY including the script, so there is only one solution a pot of coffee and insomnia being my ally, as i am going to attempt and rewrite the entire thing tonight, now lets just hope i can remember it all

We have a Title!

We spent the past couple of days coming up with a title for our opening sequence

The contenders we had were:

Erased
Dispoasable
Cutting
Alive
Fear
Obscure
Obsolete
Obscurity
Cursed

We have decided through a long list of names that we had to finally go for 'Disposable'.

We wanted to use a simple one word title as using a phrased title started to over complicate things. A simple one word title sums up the film and the main Protaganist's feelings simply and makes it easy for the audience to understand his emotions

Importing, editing and yet more storyboarding!!!!

We spent yesterday uploading our footage which took a conciderable part of the lesson to do. Tom began to redraft the storyboard again! We have started brainstorming some ideas for names for our film.

Today Tom continues to redraft our storyboard and Jake has editing our footage to make our final production. I (George) have to retreive some extra footage from another computer but the core of our footage has been finalised.

Jakes birthday!!!!!!!!!

After looking through our footage and we realised that some parts of it didn't work. using only teenagers didn't give us a broad demographic therefore it didn't give the effect we wanted. we have now changed our idea to focus purely on one person. Tom has started redoing our storyboard to include some extra shots.

happy birthday to Jake

George

Half term and Jakes awesome Hair cut and boots

Jake and Tom met up and did some planning as i (George) was away on a geography school trip for most of the week. Tom story-boarded our 1st draft of our new film idea.
We changed our film idea as our original idea did not work narratively and we had problems with casting. our new idea is to film about suicide.
George and tom filmed our first scenes for our film on the 20th and then we met up with Jake on the 21st to film the remainder of our shots.
oh and Jake has some sexy new boots and a pixie haircut!

Our Questionnaire

In order to find out what preferences our target audience had, we decided to hand out a questionnaire to our fellow pupils. The questions included:

1) What is your age?

2) Are you male or female?

3) What is your favourite genre of film?

Horror Comedy Sci-Fi Drama Romantic War Other

4) What particularly about the genre attracts you to it?
______________________________________
______________________________________
______________________________________
______________________________________

5) How many films do you watch in a month

0 1-3 4-5 6-8 9+

6) Has a film ever attracted you to purchase the merchandise?

Yes No

7) Do you enjoy films that make you think or entertain you?

Think Entertain

Results
1) As the dominant target audience for our questionnaire were our fellow pupils, the average of our interviewees were 16-17 .

2) The gender of our interviewees were predominantly female, as we attend a girls school. However, we were also able to find the views of the male society in our school in order to make our results unbiased.

3) We received a mixed review as to the preferred genre of film from our fellow students. The two results that came up the most were horror and comedy. However, we felt that producing a comedy film would be very difficult as some audiences may not find humour in what we feel would find as funny.

4) The results showed that our interviewees preferred the genre of horror as they enjoyed the sense of suspense and the thrill of being involved in the action as well as relating to the characters and wanting them to survive.

5) The average number of films watched in a month was 4-5 films. This shows us that there is a keen enthusiasm for films even in our younger generation. However, this could be dependant on what films are being broadcasted on TV as some may not have access to films e.g Sky Box Office.

6) The main response from our intevierwees is that they were interested to purchase merchandise depending on the success of the film. Obviously with this result, it will not affect our film but could show the potential that our production to offer merchandising and other forms of synergy e.g Soundtracks

7) From our results, we concluded that our audience preferred to be entertained rather than to think on the whole. Because of this, we included the scenes of suicide because it shocks the audience to a way it entertains them .

Unfortunately, we were only able to find the views of teenagers so this do not cover our whole target audience. However, it did significantly make the film appealing.

Film Re-Recording

After a few mishaps with the original recording of the film, we had to retake a few of the scenes. Some of the scenes were lost and so we were required to retake. Fortunately, most of the scenes did not include dialogue and so, we had the ability to re-record without affecting the continuity of the film.

Tom

fruit and film

We filmed all the shots we needed for 'feed the fish'. We encountered battery problems but got everything we need. However once uploading all the footage we found out that Tom had accidently not filmed the scene with the stairs and that we had missed out part of our conversation so we will re-film these shots tomorrow. Tom's eating a banana, i've never seen him smile so much

Locations, stroryboards and among other things sushi

After finding a location for filming our preliminary task, George and me(jake) took some pictures planning out shots, which tom has proceded to storyboard using our pictures, which will be shown in a slideshow(will be uploaded soon) next to our story board. We will begin filming next tuesday at 10, as its the only time the room we want is available. Oh and as mentioned above i ate some sushi before writing this.
